Students travel on two sorts of bus systems- school buses managed by the school for children that live in zone but far away from the school, and public buses that children travel on for convenience or to travel where school bus systems do not operate. Proactive schools manage school systems by having senior students monitoring buses and maintaining a positive culture on buses. Senior students are also useful in unraveling what might have happened if an incident occurs. Dealing with a bus incident the day it happens is best. With public bus systems, incidents can sometimes be difficult to investigate and resolve. Usually incidents are indicator behaviour for underlying issues or conflict between students. A restorative solution is a really good way to resolve conflict completely. A lot of teachers become very frustrated and upset as they are usually the last to know if a student has been bullied of the bus. One of the proactive strategies that has been incorporated is working with the older students that use the bus and help them from being passive bystanders into genuine leaders who de-escalate the situations between victim and bully. Some male student leaders thought that by giving the bully a hard time on the bus in front of the younger students would be a good way to intimidate and stop the bully. The reality is that student leaders must never become a bully themselves in the same way that they must never be a bystander to bullying on the bus. |
Our goal is to work with students, teachers and professional organisations to provide helpful information and realistic solutions for our youth. |
